Tips on winding down for bed

Pregnancy hormones, along with the added stressors of being pregnant (such as financial stress, work stress and relationship changes) can all accumulate and make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Just as you would try and wind your baby down for sleep, it is important to try and wind yourself down before trying to fall asleep.

 Devices

The blue light emitted from our devices has been shown to stimulate the brain, signalling that it is time to be awake. Not what we want right before sleep!! Putting your devices down at least 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep, can help your brain recognise that it is night and therefore help you drift off to sleep more easily.

Meditation

Meditation is a great way to relax your body and mind. There are many free guided meditation apps or YouTube videos that you can listen to. Or if you’re a seasoned pro at mediation you may like to do your own meditation.

Stretching and Yoga

Stretching or doing yoga can be a great way to help relax your muscles, especially after a long day. Just 15 minutes of stretching before bed can help you start to wind down for bed.

Read a book

There is something so relaxing about reading a book. Studies have shown that reading a book (in paper, not on a device) can help distract you from stress, wind you down for bedtime and help you have a more restful sleep.

Journaling

Writing in a journal about your day or your worries can be a great way to detach yourself from feelings of stress or being overwhelmed. It can help clear your mind and therefore encourage a better nights sleep.

Have a warm bath

Pregnancy aches and pains can becoming overwhelming by the end of the day, having a warm bath can relax your muscles and wash away the stress of the day. Even better, add in some calming aromatherapy and you’ll be drifting off to sleep in no time.

Get Comfortable

Once you’ve put your phone away, done some meditation and are relaxed before bed you’ll want to get comfortable!! Grab your Sleepybelly pregnancy pillow, find yourself a comfortable position and you’ll be able to fall asleep much faster.
